My friends and I had always wanted to try this place as we go past it to uni everyday! We came across a review that said that they were serving "stale" hoppers and it intrigued us so much that we thought we should go see what all this fuss was about.
As we walked in, a beautiful lady welcomed us and offered two choices of menus. One designed especially for us poor university kids which comes as a whole meal and another that was made to share. Since we had heard about the ever so famous hoppers, and it had been so long since I had one, I dared myself to try it just out of curiosity.
When they arrived I was shocked because what I had read and what was right in front of me were of two worlds and as I tasted it, I just didn't want to stop. It was absolutely wonderful! I received an egg hopper, 3 plain hoppers, one with a vegetable, another with lamb and a coconut sambol that was had the perfect blend of chille! whoever said that coconut sambol doesn't go with hoppers is due a check-up.
The food was filling, fresh and far beyond stale. In fact, as we were walking towards the wash room, we could see the chefs make our hoppers too.
That hopper dish, with in all its glory only $18 and along with dessert and drinks I only paid $39! it was worth every penny! Don't spread the word out, but I would've paid more!
My wife and I visited this restaurant for the first time last week. The waitress directed us towards a collection of dishes which we told we could share amongst each other. We started with a spicy crab dish whilst small was delicious enough for us to order a second offering. Our standout for mains was a mild chicken stuffed with yoghurt and papaya.
The food was scrumptious to say the least and we highly recommend it to others wishing to try a unique cuisine. I wouldn’t consider this authentic Sri-Lankan so if that what you're after, perhaps, head elsewhere. For a place with curries the meat was tender and a treat to our stomachs unlike some unnamed cheaper Indian/Sri-Lankan establishments we’ve visited in both Melbourne and abroad. Gem of a place you get what you pay for. Will definitely make a return trip!
We had an awful experience at Araliya Restaurant, on Saturday night the 15th November. My wife and I both doctors visiting Melbourne from interstate. My wife ordered Hoppers with chicken curry and I ordered rice with lamb curry. The hoppers were served cold and stale with a small portion of chicken curry put onto one of the three hoppers with a side serving of coconut sambol.
Hoppers should never be served cold and certainly never with coconut sambol.
My wife attempted to politely inquire if the Hoppers were made fresh at the time. The older waitress responded in a rude and an impolite manner and we were ignored from that point onwards. The service was ok, but the staff was not very friendly at all.
My rice and curry dish was well presented on a traditional banana leaf but the portions were almost a joke. I counted four pieces of lamb (no more than 1.5 cm cube with hardly any gravy) with a small portion of Dhal (no more than two to three table spoons). The coconut sambol was made out of packeted long-grated
Desiccated coconut.
We were not impressed with the food or the service at Araliya. Probably the worst Sri Lankan food and the dining experience we have ever had in Australia. Hardly authentic Sri Lankan cuisine or the traditional Sri Lankan service. Very disappointed.
I have never eaten indian food like this. It had so many asian influences. Went on a tuesday night so it was really quiet and nice. Service was great and the size of meals was good. Staff were also really friendly and helpful to us as it was our first time at the restaurant.
This restaurant boasts Sri Lankan-based cuisine which is flavoursome, well-presented and distinct from Indian food. Service was attentive, with good explanation of dishes. Half-full on a Tuesday evening indicating popularity amongst the locals. Moderately priced for the quality. Recommended.
