Overview of The Alchemist Cocktail & Tapas Bar

The Alchemist who took up residence at eclectic Brunswick Street in May 2009 bubbles and boils, decants and distils, emulsifies and extracts decadent and dangerous solid and liquid concoctions for the most discerning of palates.

To create The Alchemist, we searched all of Melbourne until we found, hidden away in the darkness of a dusty auctioneer’s attic, pharmacy cabinets older than a century to create our bar... Lounges and chandeliers that could be rescued and restored and all of the equipment that The Alchemist would need to create the unique and enchanting atmosphere of a medieval lab.... come and experience the experiments that go on at The Alchemist in our continual quest for that perfect potion...

Fantastic staff, and wonderful drinks menu. I have been to The Alchemist Cocktail and Tapas Bar many times and have not been disappointed. It is a place I like to bring my friends and visitors too. I have my favourites on the food menu, but I'm pleased with those. The lounges are especially comfortable.

We ate there tonight (22/1) after purchasing an OUFFER voucher - we were supposed to have a five (5) course "degustation" meal - what dreadful food - 2 small lamb koftas, 2 small potato balls, 1 small "palate cleansing salad", 1 small dreadful "bechamel lasagne", followed lastly by prawn heads(x4) & 2 whole prawns in a creamy sauce, alas we had knives & forks - on our knee so couldn't quite eat it! - this would have cost us $70! Service was not too bad - a little haphazard - but the two guys were very nice! Would I go back there - would I recommend it - Never! I believe it would certainly have been a waste of $70!

Delicious! Fantastic food, great atmosphere and a wonderful place to share a drink with a friend, went to the Alchemist for a friend's birthday, then couldn't resist returning a few days later for the live magic show and some more cocktails!
Definitely worth a look in, one of the few remaining classy bars in town.

I visited here on a Wednesday night for a few cocktails and some food with a friend. The staff were very friendly and accommodating (although the cocktails did take a little while to arrive, even before the place started to fill up).

My friend ordered the Lemon and Pink Grapefruit Brulee which she swore by, ordering it a second time. I went for the Charred Pineapple and Passionfruit Smash first which was delicious. I then picked the White Chocolate and Orange Julep which certainly packed a punch (in the best possible way)!

For food we shared the Patas Bravas (Yum!) and the Broccoli and Cauliflower (also yum) along with the Dip Plate. We ran out of bread but after asking the waitress nicely we were provided with plenty more to finish off with out dips. The place is beautifully decorated and furnished. Definitely worth visiting if you are in the mood for a little indulgence.
