This was my first foray into eating African. I have since been told that African Town is better at night than lunch as the atmosphere changes dramatically. Service was non existent and I had to struggle through the group of men packed at the bar to place my order. I ordered the vegetarian option which came out served on the grey ethiopian sour bread. I asked the waiter what I had been served and he didn't know.
So I can only guess as to what I was eating. A vinegary spinach which was delicious, a cous cous dish which tasted like....um....cous cous, a chick pea and corn dish, a pickled cabbage dish, a warm beetroot dish and spicy lentil dish. I'm not going to give up...friends tell me that there are many great African eateries around Footscray and I will follow their recommendations. At $10, it was certainly good value.
I can definitely recommend that you visit this place and give African a try at least once. The value for money is amazing and the selection of vegetarian options is great. We went of a mixed selection of meat and vegetarian dishes and each and every one of them was really interesting. Great to discard the knives and forks behind for an evening.
Really worth a visit just to eat and taste the flavours of Africa in a laid back quaint setting. I had never tried African and the staff showed me how to pick up the food and fed me with good grace.
