On a Tuesday night there isn't a great deal of choice about Melburne for a restaurant. So we went to the Afghan Gallery. Ok, upon arrival the first issue was finding a car park and so eventually we wandered into the Afghan Gallery to be cheerfully greeted ( good start ) and shown to a nice seat. A quick look around found some Afghan influence in wall adorment but sadly mainly it was cheap "Made in Japan" cups and saucers and other assorted items not terribly Afghan or middle eastern, never mind.
The menu ok. First impressions needed to be redone as it was a little shabby and dog-eared. Food selections read well ( good start ) and appeared to be reasonable in price ( also good ). A quick discussion with our waiter ( who was a little hard to understand due to being too quiet and mumbly ) and some appetizers were selected along with mains. A few minutes later ( good so far ) appetizers appeared and were for the most part, "nice" but nothing outstanding.
A quick review of the price (not so good) poor value but acceptable so far. Not long after the appetizers had been consumed the mains arrived, ( Ok this is disappointing ) and I do have to reflect again on the price, in my opinion not good value at all. Main meals average price = $16-ea ( hard earned Aussie dollars ) food served was as written on the menue but hardly a main meal in itself, more like a "smidgen" larger than the average entree at almost every other venue I have visited, so value here ? Nope sorry .. can't find it.
Ok lets get beyond the disappointing serving portions, afterall taste is everything ! After all that's why we go out to dine new exciting flavours and textures and here at the Afghan Gallery .... well .....sadly I think I would have to be an Afghan goat herder who has been in the hills for month, to say that there was any serious flavour or excitement here. Presentation was at best below average. Flavour and texture ? well sorry it was ( in my opinion ) also below average.
Ok well maybe the wine selection can cheer things up a little ? Well not quite. The selection in itself is reasonalbe and the price also reasonable but the wines are at best average which, sadly is superior to the quality of food it was served with.
Dessert well ... ok ... sweet and slightly differant ... anything to rave about or find memorable ? Again no.
Upside to the evening ... let me get back to you on that one. End result was; disappointing. Entree, mains and dessert for 2 with a bottle of wine $100-. about right price in any other restaurants but here ? Sorry, for the dollars versus the quality and portion sizes of food served, I cannot offer more than a half a star out of five stars in sympathy to the venue.
The upside .. I have thought of it now.. the wait staff were cheerful and prompt so too was the speed at which the food arrived from the kitchen. Now just fix the food flavour ( lets have some flavour ) and serving sizes and you would have a great little Afghan Restaurant !
The food here has, unfortunately, gone downhill over the past couple of years, which is a shame, because it used to be really good. There's no excuse for serving cold dishes. Nice atmosphere and the staff are quite friendly, though. Nevertheless, won't be rushing back.
Have been here twice and the food is tasty and the dishes are quite unique. having said that the decor downstairs is pretty spartan, but there are many cultural items that give the place it's charm. We made the mistake of not bringing our wine, as the wine list is awful, made up of cheap undrinkable wines.
An interesting dining experience, the table service is efficient and well humoured, and they notice when your drink is empty. A range of Vegan treats are on offer from dahls to bean dishes. The pricing is a little more than I would prefer for this kind of relatively cheap to make food but the overall experience is worth it. Watch out for minimum charges on weekends and public holidays.
Excellent value for money, good food, BYO (a plus in my book), great, friendly service, themed rustic surroundings with a comfortable ambiance. A must for people who enjoy something a little different. There is a different dining experience upstairs, Afghan caravan theme, I believe. I may try it one day although I think it is for parties, etc..
