Happened to be walking past with some friends looking for somewhere to eat one Friday night, and the Abysssinian was the only place around that was full of diners. Always a good sign, we thought - and how right we were!
We got the last table in the place, and thoroughly enjoyed everything about our meal - the wonderful service from the husband & wife team, the ambience, the fantastic food (highly recommend the platter!) and great African beers. And the price - around $40 each for mains, dessert and a couple of bottled beers is hard to complain about. Highly recommended!

From the moment we stepped through the door and were told that our 8pm booking had been changed to 8.15, nothing went right at the Abyssinian. Our party of 6 was finally seated on couches around a low coffee table, we thought to wait until the mix-up with our reservation was fixed. But no, it seemed we were meant to eat hunched over this low table, sitting on chairs that couldn't be moved close enough to get the food from the plates to our mouths without it falling on the floor.
When we asked to be moved to one of the three vacant dining tables, my friend was told that if she'd wanted a normal height table she should have specified it when she made the booking (despite that fact that there is only one coffee-table height table in the restaurant!). By the time the food came we were too uncomfortable to enjoy it. Next time I want good Ethiopian food I'll head to Footscray!

Seriously good. The platter (a bunch of different African dishes served on Injura bread) is the way to go. Book ahead as it gets busy.

This place is always packed even on a weekday. The food is awesome, the host is so friendly, the ambience is amazing. Expect to walk in and feel like you've just stepped into Morrocco! Great music too! The restaurant itself is quite small. . The decor is brilliant, adhorned with tradition African works of art and even a roof of straw. Remember to book well in advance!!!!
Try to get wooden table and chair seating because although the tradition table and chairs are lovely, the seats are really low which can leave you with a sore back. Also there is not much room for much else on the table. Order the medley plate, it's huge and you get to taste and array of dishes which all vary.
I highly recommend this place. Great for a birthday or to take your parents (or partner!) somewhere different. It's a real treat!! By the way, eat with your hands, it's much tastier this way....

A great new addition to the local Flemington cafes/restaurants. Service here is fantastic and the food even better. Definitely recommend the sharing platter, either vegetarian or meat version. It's BYO or licensed. We went with their house red ($15 for 1 litre) and it was more than drinkable.
After dinner, the owner/chef roasted coffee beans on a small fire in the dining area and coffee was offered around, a very nice touch. We had starters, sharing platter, beer and wine between six of us and it came to $55/couple. Can't go wrong with this one. It's always packed so make sure you make a reservation.
