I have been coming here for years, I do have to say the food has gone down slightly from what it used to be, but given it was already at such a high standard the food is still lovely. The price has also gone up slightly, but for a special meal out is again still reasonably prices, especially given that it is BYO, saying money on two bottles of wine makes a huge difference to the final bill. And they don't charge corkage. Still one of my favourite Melbourne restaurants.
We went for a banquet on a Saturday evening with a large group. The food was standard Lebanese fare, albeit presented nicely, and nothing bad at all. However I felt that the great reputation that this restaurant carried would have meant some special dishes, something just a little different. There wasn't, and perhaps this is because these are reserved for the full a la carte menus on less busy nights. Having said that, It was OK. The service was average, not good, not bad.
I have dined at Abla's many times over the years and am sorry to say that, overall, the experience is losing its charm. The cost of the banquet is creeping up and up and the quality/quantity of the food does not match it.
The real problem, however, is the service. Recently I dined as part of a party of 9. One of our number was a vegetarian and I advised the restaurant in advance of this. They ensured that they were happy to provide her a vegetarian banquet for the same price as the usual banquet. This seemed fine and we arrived expecting to enjoy a reasonable meal.
It was a considerable disappointment to me that the vegetarian in our group was severely short-changed, receiving not nearly as many dishes or as much food as the rest of us. This was, frankly, appalling. If anything, the vegetarian food should surely be cheaper and/or more abundant.
I don't recommend this restaurant. The food is overly salty and monotonous. There is no inspiration in the kitchen and they have eyes only for $$$ and not for customer satisfaction.
Heard big things about this restaurant and as it was quite difficult to secure a reservation we were expecting big things.
The food was very good, amazingly authentic but the service really made the night a disappointing one. We were told twice that we had to vacate our table by 7:30 pm, which was alright with us but the way we were told was just so rude. If they didn't want to serve us they shouldn't have given us the early reservation.
After making sure we understood I could here the waitress yelling at all the cooks in the kitchen to make sure our order was out as quickly as possible so they could get rid of us.... felt very unwelcome!
