In a word...terrible! This restaurant came recommended? (Georges Paragon Rest at Southport) If the Gold Coast Highway traffic noise is not enough to deter you from dining here then perhaps the poor quality of the food and the massively over priced meals will.
I had Moreton Bay Bugs which were ove rcooked and dry and a serve of chips came with it, that's it! Two small bugs and some chips. Don't be fooled by the 'half price'. As soon as you open the menu and see the prices you'll see they are double what you would normally expect to pay. Their version of 'half price' is what you would normally pay in a similar restaurant. You have been warned.
Great if you like overpriced, frozen, battered seafood. Doesn't rate with the good seafood restaurants elsewhere in Sydney, Perth, Melbourne or Brisbane. I prefer it fresh and unbattered.
Ate at Southport food was to die for. Entrees scallops and oysters and we both had BBQ bugs then pavlova and sticky date. Had the meal at half price so great value but would have been a bit expensive if you pay full price. Service best on the Gold Coast. Can't wait to go back.
My husband & I went to the restaurant on our wedding anniversary. We were seated before 6.30 pm so the food was half price. It was unbelievably good value. I had oysters and cod, and my husband bugs for entree & the lobster mornay. The fish was spectacular pity it was too big so I couldn't finish it. My husband's mornay was good, but he's had better.
Overall the atmosphere was good and service was excellent. Would definitely go back.
We visited George's at Southport and it was wonderful. We booked and were seated by 6.30 and most of the items on the menu were half price and not an inflated half price.
We made the mistake of having entrees although they were beautiful, we could not finish our main meals. The servings are large and really nice. For 3 adults with entree and main meal and drinks was a round $130 and we all had seafood and my husband had the dearest meal on the menu - which he really enjoyed. My veal oscar was beautiful. The veal thin and tender (and lots of it) but rather than just the norm of 3 prawns on top, it had balmain bugs, oysters and scallops, really unexpected.
Can't rate this restaurant highly enough. Please note though, it is is Southport, right next to Australia Fair, not in Surfers Paradise.
We have been going to George's for at least 18 years and until last year (2006) we could never fault our meals or service but 2006 to mid 2007 I believe the meals were definitely not up to standard. We went on the 25/2/08, our meals and service were back to the first class standard it was 2 years ago.
We departed the restaurant feeling unbelievably happy, the service was so warm and friendly, the food was undoubtably the best we have had in about 18 months (the last time being George's). 11 out of 10, recommend it for a romantic night any time!
The Surfers Paradise one has closed down. But we have eaten at the Soutport and Sanctuary Cove locations. If you go for lunch or are seated for dinner before 6:30pm (I think it's 6:30 could be 6:00 and also you have to book) then you get your entree's and main meals for 1/2 price - making it VERY affordable. The servings are large and the food is good quality. I found the staff very friendly particularly at the Sanctuary Cove location.
