Yamagen restaurant always offers top notch Japanese food with fresh ingredients skillfully prepared, whether teppanyaki or a la carte. The ambience is very authentic Japanese. We always visit when on the GC.

So far have had 4 different Teppanyaki dishes with friends and they were all delicious. Haven't had the chance to try the a la carte menu as my friends and I always seem to gravitate to their entertaining teppanyaki chefs and their delicious fare. We will definitely return.

We tried two of the teppanyaki options and were impressed with both and while the bugs and wagyu option can't exactly be classed as good value at $88, it's a dining treat that's worth the investment.

Wanting a lovely evening on the first night of our short Gold Coast stay, we were keen to try Yamagen, boasting its awards and recommendations. Hmm. We couldn't get a Teppanyaki booking but were still keen to try the restaurant so we accepted the a la carte option.
It took a while to be seated which is slightly disappointing given it was a Saturday night, but more disappointing was the fact that several members of staff in the Teppanyaki section noticed we had arrived and still neglected to do anything. Finally, the senior staff arrived and seated us. From then to drinks order and arrival, there were notable delays (other patrons helped themselves to water) and so we were delighted that our set menu items arrived quite promptly.
Selection, was lovely, but the kingfish sashimi from one particular course, made me gag. Literally. Then there was the tempura, over battered and the prawn was so overcooked, it tasted like tough lobster. The sushi main was pretty nice and had a good selection but the salmon and tuna was a bit on the warm side.
Overall, I've had worse dining experiences and I was hoping this would settle as average to me, until we got the bill. Bill was no problems, it was the fact that the waitress proceeded to stand right next to us, literally glowering over us when we filled in the 'tip' section and signing the check. I mean come on, if that's not unprofessionalism, I don't know what is. At least a step back would suffice.
When trying to make a helpful suggestion to who appeared as a senior staff of some sort, the excuse was she had to check the signature. Please. There are more subtle ways to check.
Overall, I was more than disappointed with the restaurant, especially with the 'awards' won and being highly recommended. I say, stick to the Teppanyaki as the patrons there appeared to have enjoyed more than us all in the a la carte section. Would I go back? Probably not. Good luck Yamagen, work your potential.
