We came here after a friend raved about how great the food was. I ordered a penne arabiatta, the penne was hard, no not al dente, hard. I had to pay for extra parmesan, which is a standard accompaniment to any pasta. There was more chilli in it than a curry and there was no flavour to the dish. I never add salt to any of my food but found myself constantly adding salt to every mouthful. All 3 friends accompanying me had the same issues with the pasta and lack of flavour. The bruschetta is a miniature serving for a full price. Thoroughly disappointed.

The first time we found Vapiano was after having sat at a nearby late night eatery, neglected for half an hour, when we looked up toward Soul and saw the red and white signage. Thank God we did.
We were immediately welcomed by a friendly, smiley face. As it was our first visit, we were guided through the menu and how to order. This is one amazing experience. You see, each person is given a credit-like card and you look over the menu to decide what kind of pasta or pizza you want with which ingredients and place your order directly with the chef who then prepares your dish right there and then in front of you, which is a fascinating experience too.
The same thing at the bar where you place your order and wave the card under the screen which displays your purchase, so as you leave you simply pay the total on the card. This allows the guest (and everyone makes you feel like a special guest) to pay together or separately as needed. This is so convenient for groups, such as after happy hour on Friday with your work-mates or the like. And the prices are very reasonable too.
Anyway, the food is fresh and tasty, the atmosphere is very pleasant, enhanced by the little herb gardens at the centre of the tables, allowing you to pick and add to your dish as required. A top location at the base of Soul but up above Cavill Mall.
We went again last Sunday afternoon, were greeted again in the same delightful manner, sat out on the balcony, enjoying the gentle ocean breeze and a lovely bottle of white with our delicious carbonara as we watched all the gorgeous (and not so attractive) people wander by just below.
The staff are so lovely and friendly too, something the Coast could do with more of. Do yourself a flavour and give Vapiano a go. Pay and order together or separately, a great, convenient concept which will no doubt take off at other venues in due course. If you like Italian, you'll love Vapiano!
