We were looking for a nice, tasty unpretentious meal so decided on Vietnamese food. The restaurant looked interesting from the outside and when we went inside the ambience seemed fairly good. We were the only diners there the whole time, which we thought was strange for a weekend night but I guess after our experience it's not hard to see why.
We ordered the Wild Boar and Tamarind Prawns with fried rice. We were a bit baffled by the lack of Vietnamese staff and started to question how authentic the food would be. One of the staff didn't really seem to know much about the cuisine, the other tried too hard to be friendly and kept asking us questions and cracking jokes while my partner and I were trying to have a serious conversation between ourselves. It was rather annoying.
We were relieved to see the chef was at least Asian and when the food came out it was tasty, the wild boar was cooked delicately, and Tamarind Prawns were ok. I recommend the Lychee drink although it seems like just cold water with canned lychee and ice in a glass.
So, aside from the annoying staff member the other part that would turn diners off is the price. Definitely not in proportion to the food. This place looks upmarket-ish and trendy, even serves decent wine but hey, you pay half the price at a real authentic vietnamese restaurant in Sydney which has wait-staff who may or may not speak great english but at least they know the food they serve and let you eat in peace.

Our group dined at the Rice Paddy on a Friday evening in March. Having recently returned from a tour of Vietnam we were disappointed that many of our favourites were either not on the menu or not available at night. For example the Pho (lunch only) and crispy pancake (not on the menu). Of the dishes we tried the Beef Salad was excellent. Tender beef with just the right amount of spice in the fresh salad. We also enjoyed the Pork Belly with egg.
The pork beautifully cooked, the eggs full of the flavoursome sauce. Wine list great but very expensive. Good, fresh food, pleasant ambience and relaxed, friendly service. We like to eat out each week but the Rice Paddy would be a special occasion outing only. No BYO wine.
