Had dinner at this restaurant last night with my family and we all enjoy it very much, kids had satay chicken and fried rice, we had coconut prawns and peking duck pancakes for entrees and paat thai and scallops.
Food is great, service is as good as any other similar priced restaurant. Certainly the best thai in the area. Will be back.

I just tried Thai Chiang Rai last night, and I am bitterly disappointed. I ordered takeaway Paat Thai (their version of Pad Thai, one of my favourite Thai dishes) and satay chicken skewers.
The Paat Thai was absolutely Disgusting. It was flavoured with a watery tomato sauce, with canned vegetables instead of fresh, and the noodles were so far overcooked to the point of being mush. I couldn't eat more than one mouthful.
The satay chicken skewers had a nice flavour but the chicken used was obviously thigh meat offcuts, and full of gristle and bone. What an absolute waste of $24 for food I could not even eat. I ended up having toast for dinner! I am extremely disappointed and will Never go back again.

We went as a group and had the banquet menu. The food was fresh, hot and very tasty. Our only complaint was the lack of service, we had to hail the waitress, who passed our table several times and made up tables rather than serve us. Once we ordered though the food came out quickly.

We started with vegetarian curry puffs. Very nice! We then followed with red chicken curry, ginger pork, chicken pad see ew and coconut rice. The red curry was the best we've had so far! Pad see ew extremely tasty. The pork was a little tough but still very tasty. We will come back again.

Went for dinner yesterday 13 Sept 2010 evening. Ordered three items. Evaluated separately. Please judge yourself:
Tom Yum Soup: Too salty, no lemon flavour and not warm rather coldish.
Pad Thai Noodle: Cooked with tomato sauce, red color, no peanut or lemon, no Buk Choy leaves, not warm.
Special Fried Rice: Stale hard rice, foreign smells, not warm, couldn't eat.
Sprite: So light, taste like water.
Service: We had to wait 40 minutes to get served, the girl serving us in school dress, no English, we complained about the food but the owner said "it is just like that".
This is probably the most awful Thai restaurant in my life. I have nothing personal with this restaurant but extremely disappointed. I don't know any other Thai restaurant in Canberra. Think twice before you go there.

Had dinner with my wife and daughter at Thai Chiang Rai, Belconnen, on the evening of Wednesday 20 January 2010. We chose a seat near the window overlooking Lake Ginninderra.
The restaurant seemed popular and was filling up quickly. We observed several ugly water stains on the ceiling. The restaurant lacked atmosphere and the decor was spartan. The place could do with refurbishing. The wait staff were clad casually in jeans with black aprons and black t-shirts. No Thai costumes, orchids etc. The staff appeared very inexperienced and seemed to have had no training in hospitality whatsoever. They may have been foreign students doing a summer vacation job. It was obvious that English was not their lingua franca.
Now to the food. We enjoyed the Squid fried in lemongrass and chilli, very soft and tasty indeed. The chicken green curry had a touch of spiciness, though milder than the real McCoy. However, the beef jungle curry was watery and soupy, not so appealing. They were generous with the steamed rice. Our coconut juice (with large pieces of kernel) was served in tall glasses with straws only. There was no way that we could suck these with our straws. We put this down to lack of experience on the part of the waitress who served us. We had to request long spoons to scoop up the kernels from the bottom of the glass.
It is puzzling how Thai Chiang Rai was awarded a Best Restaurant award, as claimed.

We have dined at this restaurant twice in the past 6 weeks. On both occasions we waited over 45 minutes for our main meals. The staff seem uninformed and confused. We will not be dining at Thai Chang Rai again.

Nice food, quite efficient service, quite a quiet restaurant though, better for intimate dinners.
