Omg - where do I start? Went there for lunch to celebrate a birthday. They lost our booking (we booked a week before). Wait staff were less than interested and we stood waiting to be seated for at least 10 minutes. They had advertised that they served alacarte lunch, all we were given was an all day dining menu, probably the same one for room service for the hotel.
The waiter argued about what we received as inclusions with our meals (although it was listed in black and white on the menu) and wanted to charge us extra. We were only asked for drinks once. We had to ask for pepper, salt and serviettes to be placed on the table. Overall a very disappointing experience and one we will not be repeating.

We were staying at the Rydges and decided to dine at the Fig Tree Cafe out of convenience and the menu was also quite attractive.
At the outset it didn't look positive with nobody at the entry to greet us. We spent a minute or so mulling about the foyer before someone appeared and we were seated. It was a little chilly being under an atrium with water and plant life around but that setting also adds a relaxed atmosphere. I'd dress heavy during the colder months.
The wait staff had their ups and downs. One was helpful regarding allergies but on one occasion failed to return with an answer. The other spilled a drink. Accidents happen so fair enough but I thought he could compensate more than just refilling the glass when the table had been soaked and it was a slight inconvenience to the person seated there. Overall the wait staff were competent and knowledgeable.
Now to the food which was the best part of the experience, as it should be. My party ordered many of the dishes on the menu to share. Everyone was very satisfied with their starters and mains but the desserts were a let down, especially at the cost. The other dishes were reasonably priced but I could have gotten the same satisfaction I did from the chocolate pannacotta from something half the cost.
The other dishes are on the small side but I guess you expect that with fine dining, which I consider the Fig Tree Cafe to be. Even though the setting doesn't say it, the quality of food and interesting flavour combinations do.
The crab and whiting with orange emulsion is delicately and beautifully flavoured, and the smoked lamb dish is to die for. The combination of smoky lamb, rich, buttery potatoes and port sauce is offset wonderfully with a shooter of brightly flavoured pea puree. The Wagyu and pan-fried Salmon were also enjoyed by other members of my party.
We wanted to watch the footy and it was good to be able to order dessert to be delivered to our room.

Im not sure where to start. Ok with a positive. The guy that took me to my table and got the menus was very nice polite and did give any hint to the rollercoaster I was about to embark.
The table was cold there was a draft everywhere, so I moved to a table that somehow was colder! so I moved back. I was told by my new waiter, yeah people tend to wear coats. I looked around and he was right. I ordered the hot soup and the portuguese seafood combination. I also order a lemon, lime and bitters (being on Dry July at the time). The drink came and was made from Lime cordial! ha ha let me tell you, not nice. Then my soup arrived at the sametime as my main.
I look at the waiter puzzled and he said didn't you order these. I said Yes I had and off he went. I called him back to explain the issue of eating hot soup while the seafood main is waiting for my attention. He then seemed to understand. I then had a change of heart and said cancel the main I'll just have the soup. The soup was ok. I left.
So if you are coming here, enjoy the service of the guy taking you to your table then before ordering run! It will be cheaper and a much better experience.
