Food 4 Ambience 6 Service 5 Value 6
Have now tried Farmers Daughter twice, as the jury was out after my first breakfast visit about 4 weeks ago. The inside of the café is lovely – very trendy with large bench-style tables dominating and a few regular tables for smaller groups – but there were only a few empty tables and the noise was too much in such a small area. Yarralumla is a lovely suburb and the café is set in a little complex of local shops, so I chose one of four very small outside tables in the sunshine. The coffee was great, but the service was slow (seemed as though I was forgotten as it took more than 10 minutes before anyone came near me…). My ‘no ordinary toast soldiers’ were delicious, but they just weren’t substantial enough and I was still a little hungry afterwards. Overall, I wasn’t really enthused by the total experience, but neither was I disappointed to the point of giving up on Farmer’s Daughter.
I went back this week for lunch with a friend, and again was left feeling a little underwhelmed. This time the service was much faster, although my friend and I were one of only three tables. My friend enjoyed her pumpkin and rocket salad, but my BLT was really disappointing. How can you go wrong with a BLT? The caramelised garlic bread was fantastic, but the bacon was cold and obviously cooked earlier in the day. I was asked at the time of ordering if I wanted my BLT toasted, which in hindsight would have been better than stone-cold bacon, but I am not a fan of warm, wilted lettuce either and I simply did not expect a BLT where the bacon is not cooked fresh. The coffee was still great though, but I just couldn’t poke down my cold sandwich.
I love trying different places to eat and my willingness to travel for this is a bit of a joke amongst my friends. However, I am a traditionalist. Yes, fancy décor, fashionable ingredients and funky staff are all well and good, but to me these things are secondary to consistently good food and coffee. This café is literally around the corner from one of my Canberra favourites, Beess and Co, which has fast service, great food and with prices similar to Farmer’s Daughter. For me, Farmer’s Daughter haven’t quite hit the nail on the head for a regular girl like me who is quite tolerant of higher prices and less than perfect service… provided my food is spot-on. The coffee is really good, but after two visits, Farmer’s Daughter is off my list as a place to eat.

Tight space, loads lined up at the door waiting. Limited menu, sleek fit out, crazy loud, coffee, worth every bit. I wanted to rejoin the queue over and over for more.
