Overview of Seasalt at Armstrongs

Seasalt is prominent Brisbane Chef Russel Armstrong's restaurant at the Inchcolm Hotel. It is a top choice for fine dining in Brisbane. Cosy and slightly hidden, entering the restaurant is surprising. An airy room with off-white walls and white-clothed tables greets patrons. At Seasalt, Chef Armstrong shifts to a more basic cooking style with his classical European training still evident in certain touches and presentation.

I had previously been to the restaurant for a friend's wedding some years ago and recalled how nice the food was so I decided to hold a small dinner there for my Dad's 70th Birthday. We arrived to a nicely presented restaurant, however, we could hear the kitchen staff carrying on and joking amongst themselves and this really affected the atmosphere and it appeared extremely unprofessional. Some lovely warm ciabatta bread was served with some tasty olives, but then things started going a little pear shaped.

The manager brought out what he called a 'palate cleanser' which turned out to be an excessively salty hoi sin sauce flavoured 'broth' that numbed my mouth. It was extremely unpalatable and no one managed to finish what was only a shot-glass quantity of the liquid. We were then 'treated' to an additional dish of pippies in a creamy broth that looked fabulous, however, it too was unbelievably salty and rubbery in texture.

The main meals seemed very bland and portion sizes were small given the price of $38.50. I ordered the bread and butter pudding for dessert that took a long time to arrive, and it was very tasty. The service was good to begin with, however, it deteriorated as soon as another 2 tables of guests arrived and the restaurant became very noisy.

Furthermore, the senior staff consistently served us our meals and cleared plates by handing items over a balustrade, instead of walking the additional 10 steps that it would have taken to stand beside our table. We had a discrepancy in the billing also where the senior staff responded to my query by stating that "I just work here and do as I'm told". Needless to say I won't be dining there ever again. In summary, the restaurant has overpriced, salty food (possibly true to the name) with very so-so service.

Had lunch at Seasalt after a busy day of Christmas shopping this week. My mum and I enjoyed the little break entirely. I ordered the pork main course with an interesting green apple puree and savoy cabbage. It was absolutely delicious.

After that we shared the hot chocolate fondant with raspberries and also the lemon tart with home made blueberry ice cream. I will certainly be back next year to try more.

Work were paying so we thought we would give it a shot. Great cabonara here try it, it's a bit different. Wonderful tender lamb too & good wine list.
