Overview of Scales & Ales Gourmet Fish Bar

Crisp, clean, inviting atmosphere with a well priced funky seafood menu with offerings for carnivores and vegetarians. A very impressive beer menu with offerings from Little Creatures Rogers, Brewboys Ace of Spade Stout and Meantine Indian Pale Ale in a fun sharing volume of 750ml. You can also acquire a good old Corona, Asahi or Crown Larger to name a few from the 25 bottle list. There is also a fantastic wine list with a great selection by the glass.

Order fish & chips with genuine hand cut chips and the freshest species of the day (for you to choose from) for $16.50. Oysters are freshly shucked to order and the kids have one of the best menus around with colouring in and word find to keep them happy.

Little restaurant off Oxford street, formerly the site of the Tomato Brothers pizza place. The main floor only seats about 30 so be sure to book ahead especially for the weekend, But we were lucky enough to snag to spots up in the bar dining area, looking out the big open windows to the 152 and Oxford Street.

By a happy coincidence Tuesday night they are running a special, 1kg of Mussels for $15, so we shared a pot of the White Wine and Garlic flavour as a starter and followed up with the Crab Tortellini for me and Whole Baby Barra for my friend. There was a slight wait on the food but the place was packed for such a small venue and the girls were running around keeping everyone with drinks so we didn't mind sitting and munching our Garlic and Rosemary bread while we waited.

The Mussels had incredible amounts of flavour and we decided to debunk that old wives tale and eat the ones that hadn't popped open on advice from the waitress that we'd be safe (and we were, not a hint of a sore tum). The accompanying Beer Bread baked in house was fantastic also and we were able to request some extra to soak up the broth at no charge. The Crab Tortellini which I had for main (in the small size) was fresh and I especially liked the tasty little Salmon Pearls (eggs) floating in the clear tomato broth.

The Whole Baby Barra was terrifying with its head and tail left on (we were offered when ordering to remove the head and tail but my friend is one of the brave) but so succulent and with a lot of meat available and not too many small bones. The cheek flesh was especially nice and for that reason my friend was glad he opted for the head.

We were too full for dessert but the Poached Pear in Blueberry soup will definitely be on my wishlist on our next visit. Groups of more than two will definitely want to book, but we loved dining up in the bar and will be looking to try a "Beer Degustation" in the near future!

I'll never go back, definitely not gourmet, the fish was very ordinary and the prawn dish tasteless with no dressing as advertised. Expensive for what you get, including most of the beers.

Value for money is sadly lacking in this Bulimba seafood joint. The food was very average for what we were hoping for. Hand cut chips and onion rings not crisp. Fish that tasted like it had been frozen. The concept is great except the "beer book" has many beers no longer available. A very sad and disappointing experience. They should be lucky we are not critics for the courier mail.

The food is way over priced I think the staff are amazing got some of the best service I had ever had from a Jax and John they were awesome. Even feeling tho I had paid too much for my meals the service does make me want to give it another go.

A lovely clean/crisp venue with fabulous service. The menu is not extensive but that is good as what you get is fantastic and the daily specials are always varied. Nice place in a hidden spot but worth finding.
