Carefully chose this restaurant on basis of reputation for very special occasion (50th birthday). Booking made with chef/owner, Sam, by phone. Assured of special table and dessert (not allowed to bring own cake). On arrival, booking gone astray & restaurant full. Waiter kindly set up table out on noisy footpath. Told that chef/owner would come to talk to us but he never showed. Waited 2 hours for meal. Tiny overpriced meals, no vegetarian main options on menu. Vegetarian meal supplied that looked (and tasted) like it came from a can. Fish not fresh and smelt bad - couldn't eat it; lamb very undercooked. Mushroom side, chips and desserts were okay.

No apology from owner/chef for booking mix-up, no special dessert for birthday guest, no discount for distress/embarrassment suffered. Waiter was attentive and helpful but a little intrusive. Spoke to chef/owner afterwards - still no compensations offered - just shrugged shoulders. Waitress at counter added insult to injury by suggesting I may have booked another restaurant! We would not return and definitely don't recommend. Shame because this restaurant had such a good name once (& visit 2 years ago was good) but seems to have gone steeply downhill!

Perhaps, we were aiming a little high when we booked a table at Rapide. Having had possibly the worst week imaginable we thought we'd treat ourselves to a no expense spared night out. The waitress was friendly and attentive. Entrees were without a doubt fabulous. Then came the mains. The waitress advised that the duck was served medium-rare, however, we could request medium if we’d prefer (it was apparent that the raw duck was not considered a hit by customers in the past! – the table behind us commented how terrible it was which should have been a sign!).

Not being a fan of sinewy bloody duck I said medium would be fabulous. When the duck turned up rare I was extremely disappointed. I gave the kitchen staff the benefit of the doubt and ate some of the dish, this only confirmed my initial disappointment. The waitress said she thought the duck should have gone back to the kitchen but offered no apology for serving the underdone dish. $200 later we’re hungry and extremely disappointed by the whole experience. We won’t be going back.

Menu reads well, but (to my taste) the food needs more bite. Maybe because we eat Thai commonly? Very popular, well run, well presented, relaxed restaurant. Would recommend if you like the menu. Would be easier if it had a website!
