We had a lovely trip. The food was great and plenty of it. Service was spot on and the entertainment really complimented the trip. Certainly recommend it as value for money and think it is a Brisbane 'must do'.

Yep another appalling experience review here. My husband and I spent $400 for the New Years Eve cruise on the very top deck. For this we assumed it would be a classy night out filled with bubbles, fine dining (even with the canapes that was on the menu) and quality entertainment to dance to.

Well what a joke it was. I am so upset that we paid the money for the disgusting night it was. We were served party pies, spring rolls, mini pizzas, samosas - and I am not talking about homemade here, I still can't believe they served this. The good thing is that there were around 4 choices of beer and wine. There was limited staff to wait on the patrons. A lovely man did his best to get around to some of the guests, but it just didn't cut it and the trays were left in the middle of the deck where you helped yourself.

Generally, all of the staff were really lovely and welcoming (the only +). I enjoy having a fun night out but at $200 a pop I didn't expect to be surrounded by young, loud hooligans - I thought it was going to be a classy event! The music was cheesy DJ tunes that even as a professional dancer I did not wish to dance to.

However, the view was lovely and my husband and I did our best to enjoy ourselves. I do not recommend wasting your money...get a city cat!

Last Friday night I took my wife and family to dinner onboard the river queens, and would just like to say that the staff were very helpful, the hot buffet was great with a dozen or so dishes to choose from, and the seafood and some of the best I've had in a long time especially the oysters.

The cruise itself was fantastic, a view of Brisbane from a different perspective. you can definitely see the time and effort that went into making sure that we enjoyed ourselves. Money well spent, I know I'll be back.

Hubby and I had friends staying from Overseas and we thought what a perfect way to show them Brisbane and share dinner at the same time. I have to say that reading some of the reviews I didn't know what to think, but we all had a fantastic evening!
There was a bit of a line up to get on board, but I guess you can't all be seated at the same time. I'm not a seafood lover, but our guests are raving fans, and they had a great time indulging in filling their plate.

In between courses we all went for a wander around the decks, couldn't help but whipping out the scene from Titanic (with Winslet and Decaprio), wonder how many people have done this- would love to know! LOL. All in all it did prove to be the perfect way to show off Brissy to our visitors! More visitors back over Christmas, will be taking them on the lunch cruise to try that out. (Will make sure to let u know).

We went on the Kookaburra Queen on Friday night the 6th of October for my husbands 50th Birthday. We had a great night, the food was good, service was very good and the ambience awesome! Thank you.

Ok, booked at the last minute and surprised we even managed to get a table. In hindsight we should have gone to a restaurant.

Problem 1: There is no table service for drinks and only two bar staff.

Problem 2: The meal is buffet style and you are called by table number to get your meals 1st helping so being on table 20 it took a while for us to get food.

Problem 3: The food selection was pretty basic, prawns, baby lobsters, crabs three curries and odd lasagne, pork and beef and something laughingly called a salad.

Problem 4: The entertainment, basically a guy who could barely sing Rod Stewart, Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley and when he wasn't 'singing' he just played music from his laptop. Oh and when he was singing he kept forgetting the words and made them up. I would class him as Karaoke at best and bad Karaoke at that.

Problem 5: The buffet stopped 40 minutes after we started so they could change over to the mediocre dessert. So, it is most definitely not an all you can eat buffet.

Problem 6: The rude wait staff or in particular one female wait person who decided to take all the bread plates even though we had just started dinner despite the fact that I had a bread roll in my hand.

At one point I asked a wait person what time we got back to shore and when she said in 90 minutes my guest asked what a shame he could not jump over board. When I told her why she went and got the supervisor and I explained it all again. The supervisor offered to get us a plate more of food but by that point we were disinterested. We did accept the offer of a free drink.

We returned to my hotel and had dessert in the restaurant and when our waitress asked what we had done this evening all I said was we went on the Kookaburra River Cruise and she replied "Enough said".

Suffice it to say if you want to do something in Brisbane my recommendation is to Never go on the Kookaburra River Cruise as it is over priced and the food is rubbish. Oh and did I happen to mention the drinks were not cold especially the soft drinks.

Update: Tuesday September 20th 2011

This afternoon I received a call from Jim of Kookaburra River Cruises.

Response 1: Table service is not offered on the website but you can request table service from management when booking. Not sure if there is a fee for that so best to ask.

Response 2: They will now trial allowing people to start their meals once they board rather than once they depart the pier thus giving approx 90 minutes for the buffet.

So, now that you have read the reviews you can make up your own minds.

We are sorry that your experience on board the Kookaburra River Queens did not meet with you expectations of what we offer.

The Kookaburra River Queens have always offered our buffet style menu for lunch and dinner. Whilst we do recognise that a buffet is perhaps not everyone's cup of tea, it is what we have successfully offered to many happy customers (many of which are repeat) for over 20 years now.

We do provide a wide selection of hot, cold and fresh menu items on our buffet.

As you mention in your review, once you had alerted our staff of your feelings, they did attempt to compensate you.

As you have not made mention to the cruise itself, we do hope that you enjoyed this aspect of your dining experience, as this is the unique feature that the Kookaburra River Queens offers for diners and a point of difference from other dining experiences in Brisbane. The Brisbane river is spectacular at night!

Again we are sorry that your experience was not what you were expecting.

My husband surprised me with dinner on the Kookaburra Queen for my 40th birthday, and it was a night I'll always remember. Cruising the river aboard this gorgeous Paddlewheeler, being treated to a beautiful smorgasbord with yummy fresh seafood, enjoying live music, and being enchanted by the lights of the city. I just wanted to move in and live there! Since then we've been back many times including celebrating my 50th, his 60th, and we've recommended it to lots of friends.

There is a real fun and friendly atmosphere on the kookaburra, created by the attentive employees, who went above and beyond the call of duty. The food exceeded my expectations, with a delightful seafood and salad bar, teamed with gorgeous views of Brisbane River. I was told that children were permitted, which is good because I will definitely be taking all the family on my next visit.

I hear about the boats through a leaflet at my hotel reception. We thought it would be a great way to see Brisbane and we were proved right. We had a wonderful experience and enjoyed a great buffet lunch. The staff were friendly too and it was a great way to experience Brisbane.

Agree with the first reviewer, very average fare, with so so service. More like 3 star but 5 star prices. Don't bother, make a sandwich and catch the city cat instead.
