“The whole experience was a bit of a nightmare. Our young waiter and waitress were rather awkward and didn't know the dishes very well. Considering the high price of the food I would have expected trained staff. My crab meat and pork mince with vermicelli and mushroom looked awful and smelt worse. The dish was very greasy and covered in cracked pepper. Between the strong mushroom and pepper you could not even taste the crab meat. Despite being ravenous, I only ate half the dish and later wish I hadn’t.
My Mum ordered the duck on kai lan with mixed herbs. The mixed herbs ended up being a single stalk of yellowed coriander and the kailan was a small amount of an interesting sweet, deep fried creation. Enough for a garnish but not really adequate to provide enough vegetable to accompany the duck. The duck itself was a beautiful breast which was ruined by the taste of the oil or fat it had obviously been deep fried in. The sweet vinegar dipping sauce did not complement or diminsh the fatty sickly taste of the duck.
When it comes to Vietnamese, stick to the cheap and cheerful options around West End and elsewhere.”
Decent restaurant, and the highlight is definitely the food. Tasty stuff, and seemingly quite authentic. However, the rest lets green papaya down a bit, too bright to have real atmosphere, service that was a bit 'sheltered workship' and high-ish prices for Brisbane. I'd go again for the food, but green papaya has a way to go.
