Overview of Grasshopper

Stylish cooking with an Asian edge is the star attraction of Grasshopper, located in the eat/drink precinct of hip, inner city Teneriffe. With a deck perfect for people watching and a convivial atmosphere, Grasshopper is the kind of casual chic that appeals to a proper Saturday night out as well as a quick Monday night bite. Starters are priced from $8-$18 and mains from $15 to $28 making Grasshopper perfect for birthdays and group dinners.

Wendy Hall, City News: "Grasshopper Asian Kitchen has talented Head Chef Minh Le, whose CV lists time at Alchemy and Seasalt at Armstrongs, at the helm. His colourful menu aims to raise the bar in the City's Asian offerings. Gorgeous decor transports diners to another world. One word: Go."

Natascha Mirosch, Courier Mail: "Grasshopper’s menu...wanders Asia, taking a little of this and that and spicing it with something from somewhere else. Minh’s food was excellent - showing a sure hand with the pretty tricky job of balancing strong Asian flavours. There’s a pretty solid wine list, with quite a few aromatic blends and some interesting drops from places as far as Austria, Oregon and Argentina."

If only we hadn't taken to heart the review we read in the paper we would have saved a night of our life for something better or anything for that matter.

The food was so awful only one of the 4 mains we ordered could be eaten at all. We noticed after ours was carried back to the garbage so were at least one from every other table in the house. So aware were the staff of one dish being unedible they even offered a side dish before they placed it on the table. Too bad that came 20 minutes later and was not a complimentary flavour to the dish nor man kind. Even the starters were disappointments, 1 of which arrived 45 minutes after the other three with no apologies.

As it was a stingy single scallop (22.50) on a thimble size avocado puree on a giant plate it looked like a single umbrella in the centre of King George Square. Staff never came to table to ask about meals, refills of drinks or dessert orders, and it was difficult to even get their attention until we finally went inside to complain and were dutifully presented for the full bill including drinks from another table! Disaster of the greatest degree so far in Brisbane

Excellent food and friendly service. I have been here twice now and will recommend to all. The pork belly and deep fried ice cream are the standouts. Good spot to watch a storm too.

I called up on the Friday morning and was told they were full, but if we were to have drinks at the wine bar next door we would be first on the waiting list. I agreed to this thinking at worst we could go to Beccofino, which doesn’t take bookings. For anyone else, remember to book early to get yourself a reasonable time. As it turned out we got a phone call and were seated at 8:30 which was fine.

Foodwise, I started with the soft shell crab which was nothing special. My main was much more delicious, beef cheeks with a delicious rich sauce. Nothing really to look at but it tasted beautifully. My friend had very large spring rolls to start which he was very happy with but didn’t finish as it was quite a lot, and the Vietnamese coleslaw, which I have to say I was a bit wary of but he said it was great and just like they do in Vietnam.

Pudding, I had the pannacotta which was divine, though I felt myself thinking (a la Masterchef) ‘this better have a perfect wobble’ – but it did and was excellent, together with some sort of light pink sauce. Friend had the fruit terrine, hardly very asian but looked cute with the green jelly and tasted great!

The food here is great, I’d recommend two courses unless you’re having a long dinner because the portions are larger than expected. The final bill was $140 for both of us, three courses and drinks. Service was good. No coffee however. Hard to rate the ambience as all the tables are outside on a deck. Definitely worth trying out.
