This food is amazing I can remember going here as a child, and I didn't have a clue that it was all veges. I still go there for an awesome feed. I've never experienced the metal plates making the food go cold, but that may be because I eat it in about a second.. it tastes so good! Kofta balls with chutney are the most yummy food in the whole world no joke and I convinced my friend that veges can taste good!
Don't be put off by the Hare Krishna decor and people, it is very clean. The food is served on metal plates which you put on a plastic tray and slide down until you get to the register (kind of like high school). They don't have EFTPOS. This restaurant is really good value. During lunch times they offer a $10 all you can eat buffet you get a rice and curry dish, plus vegetables and dessert (usually a halva with custard) plus a drink.
I have never been able to go for second servings as the food tends to fill me up for the whole day, they give you really generous servings although I always make room for extra dessert! Once you have finished eating you should take your tray up to the rack so they can clean it.
For dinners they have different cuisines on different days, so read the notice board. On Thursdays they tend to do a Thai cuisine, I prefer the Indian stuff that they do.
Vegetarians rejoice! What a wonderful out of the way restaurant Govinda's is. The last time I was at Govinda's was as a uni student for their Sunday feast, which is an experience. So with this fond memory at the forfront of my mind we climbed the stairs to the restaurant. We dined on a Friday night and paid $10 for the buffet. The food was great, the service good and we sat by at an open window which enabled us to watch the Friday night going-ons on Elizabeth Street below. I enjoyed revisting this little place and have good intentions not to leave it so long between meals next time!
