I really want to love this place, firstly because it's in walking distance of my house, and secondly because the concept is good. The problem is, that it's just not as good as it seems it should be. The pies are average, they've tried, by using real steak, but it's often still tough and the gravy is not flavourful. Today I had the steak cheese and bacon pie, and the cheese had not even melted properly.
Moving on to sweets, I really like the idea of the boysenberry brioche, the brioche itself is good, but there is too much cream and not enough boysenberry. The jam donut has a glob of jam on the top, but the tiniest ammount of jam in the inside, which is the whole point of a jam donut. I haven't tried it, but I observed today that the chocolate croissant had a cupcake style glaze on top of it, weird. Please try harder to make this place better! I really want it to be good, but the recipes need tweeking.

This place was great. Now it's average. It was a very 'special' place to visit with a truly European feel down to the old table the breads and treats were stacked upon. And along came new management :-( Out with the table, in with an ugly refrigerated display. Ambience from ten to zero in a day! And the recipes have been fiddled with. The old favourites just don't taste the same. I stayed away for months in a state of depression over all that wast lost.
Recently I've taken to sampling the old favourites again... but they're not the same. The Rosemary rolls were dense little powerhouses of yum. Now they are twice the size, soft and fluffy! It doesn't work. Actually, everything seems bigger and that certainly doesn't translate to better. I loved the dense heavy breads and pastries. My daughter (10 yrs old) just loved the chocolate croissants, but no more. She has a very discerning palate and says "they're too big and they don't taste the same" I never ate them, so I don't have an opinion. They variety of specialty breads remain and again are not up to the old standard. Never-the-less, they stock many items that simply can't be found elsewhere... for better or worse.
