China Sea was previously located in the valley before shifting to Milton. IMHO the food is good, but the service (provided mostly by Asian uni students) is hit and miss.
Decided to have dinner here last Saturday night as we were feeling like Chinese Seafood and it was also in the hotel where we were staying (Central Cosmo on Park).
The menu has quite good variety with the serving dishes etc. being quite ornate and different, plus there was plenty of awards on the wall. All I can say is that either it changed hands since the last award in 2006, or someone is having a lend of someone. It's not that the food was terrible (it wasn't, though it certainly wasn't outstanding), it's that the service lacked any enthusiasm or intelligence unless you were a fairly well-to-do regular, and even that I'd regard as average at best.
The latter got you some attention of the senior staff who otherwise seemed to regard the presence of many of the other diners as an inconvenience. Disappointing. The other wait-staff, while pleasant, often didn't seem to know what they were doing and there was no order to how they were working (I might also comment that the restaurant was only 50% full). It took over 20 minutes for a pot of Chinese tea to arrive, and two of our main courses were served more than 15 minutes before they managed to get some boiled rice to our table.
The fact that the rice sat on the servery for that entire 15 minutes with staff just wandering past without questioning its lonely existence pretty much sums up the level of service for the evening. I can assure you we weren't the only ones looking around for someone to take an order or clear their table.
The food was OK, but nothing special with many of the flavours being fairly benign. The 'chilli-salted' squid while being very well cooked lacked spice and I must say, salt. While the szechuan chicken lack any distinct flavours and again spice. It is I must say the standard you would expect from a very average Chinese restaurant in suburbia, not in the heart of Milton.
With the general disregard for service extending to the payment of the bill and departure, it's highly unlikely I'd give this place a 2nd chance. This is quite disappointing given that I'll be spending a fair amount of time in Brisbane over the next few months, staying at the hotel where this restaurant is located. It would seem that apart from a few local Thai restaurants, a trip to Fortitude Valley may be the only option for finding a decent Asian cuisine (and better service!).
