Not a good experience and we were not the only ones having problems. We came here, at 5.30pm, for a light meal before a 7.30pm performance. We thought that two salads and some wine could be served and consumed in about forty five minutes, leaving time for a stroll along the river before heading to the P.A.C. What optimism!
MM placed our order at the bar. Wine arrived promptly. We were beginning to get a bit restive when a staff member came to the table to check our order. The lemon and pepper calamari salad arrived soon after. We had intended to share both dishes, so started on it. We reminded the staff that we had also ordered a Thai beef salad. The manager was summoned he had our order slip in hand and assured us it would be expedited. We declined an offer of coffee because of our need to arrive at the theatre on time, so he gave MM some vouchers for free coffee in the future. Our salad arrived, along with ANOTHER calamari salad. We sent the extra dish away, enjoyed the Thai beef salad, finished our wine and left.
Two young ladies at a nearby table also had an interesting time first; the wrong drinks were brought to the table, then an entree serve of a dish instead of the main which had been ordered more coffee vouchers handed over. The couple behind us had a messed up order, more free coffee. All the while, staff were circling the restaurant trying to find the rightful recipients of a number of orders. The food was fine, the duo providing entertainment very good, but it would not be worth the hassle to come here again. MM gave the coffee vouchers to a work colleague who enjoys the relaxed atmosphere of the Southbank restaurants in general.
Beware - Unpleasant manager and/or head waiter. It isn't enough that the drinks are expensive and for the price you pay for your (dinner) meals you would expect table service but then they get your orders incomplete or totally wrong which is a poor effort.
Though the highlight of my night/experience was when the Head Waiter and/or Manager challenged me on whether my pasta was undercooked or not and then had the nerve to then say "well we have tried it out the back and we think you are wrong!". When he was asked what he was going to do about it, his response was "well you didn't want anything else" - no compensation was offered until a complaint was made. It is such a shame because I can forgive and forget the mix up of orders and on some level having to go up to the counter to order my own food but I am unforgiving in regards to the arrogance and attitude of the manager!
Lucky for San Marco that they have one of the perfect spots on the river because I think that is the only thing people would come back for. I hope they don't think that this lets them get away with average food, mediocre service and expensive prices for their drinks?! I am with you Mr Axeman.
We visited here Sat 07 Jun 08 and it is the worst venue I have even been to. It is bad enough that in a place that charges $27-$30/main meal you have to order at the bar, but you also need to be patient when ordering drinks as they can often take 20-30 mins to come out. Daiquiri's we ordered took 20 mins to come and looked like they were made with whole ice cubes - the chunks of ice were so big. Also the garnish with soft, brown strawberries was a particularly nice touch.
The staff seemed to think that 120 covers for dinner was a busy night and as a consequence we should be grateful to get any service at all - no matter how poor.
The place looks tired and in need or a refit, the layout is awful and the entertainment is so loud that we had to shout to be heard over it. This is not the fault of the entertainers though as they are located about 2m from the nearest table.
There was one girl working the bar and she did a tremendous job - the only highlight of an otherwise terrible experience. The staff appears to be way over his head running this place and it shows. Avoid at all costs.
