Operating uninterrupted since 1889, this place oozes history. It is set in a beautiful location, across the Breakfast Creek from Newstead Park, and has good outdoor seating. Inside you see interesting photos and memorablia of the place's carefully preserved past, almost a museum, with American GIs ordering beers at the counter and the very building standing against the 1974 flood. I like the places that become a part of their immediate cultural environment and this place undeniably succeeded in this.

You still get served XXXX Bitter from the wooden keg here, supposedly the only place to do it in Queensland. Probably more of a marketing gimmick than anything else but if you're a tourist, it works. Otherwise, nothing special with the drinks. The food means "steak", and a big one at that. But be careful, even though you're in a pub, these steaks can easily set you back $40 or even more, quite steep indeed for a pub fare.

Now they are quality steaks for sure, and they are cooked quite masterfully but still, these steaks are eaten on a wooden table you find yourself outside and they are self-served from the counter, so I don't see much of a value there I'm afraid, when they cost as much as they do.

Overall, somewhere to see for the nice ambience, especially if you dig historical place. While you're at it, might as well have a steak too, if you're really hungry. But, otherwise, just get a beer and chill out on the outside garden if the weather is good. I'm not in a rush to go back there, but if I did, that's what I would do.
