Black Forest is certainly an experience in international dining. The very cosy interior sports all manner of Bavaria and kitsch. Dolls, maps, artifacts, posters. There is piano too (but not sure how often the guy plays). We were there on a Friday night. As expected, the menu is meat meat meat, with meat sauce. Surprisingly, there is an extensive menu and I found it hard to decide what I should get. I settled for the venison.
The meals are quite $$$ with the entrees around $15 and the mains all at $30. I ordered a sprite also, but got the diet version served in a glass. The venison was 4 medallions, extremely juicy and tender, drowned in a rich, mushroom filled gravy, and accompanied by spaetzle (german noodles, panfried). Also a wedge of stewed red wine pear, which was served with a dollop of sweet custard (!?). The atmosphere was lively and the place soon filled up.
However, we were given dessert menus and left alone for over 20 minutes, by which time I was over the whole thing and we decided to head to a cafe for sweets instead. The pianist played beautiful classics by German composers. All in all, it was an expensive but pleasant outing. Everyone was extremely friendly, including the chef who said hello each time he walked past. Oh, of course, the menu also sports a whole page of beer.
A pleasant smaller restaurant, not too noisy with attentive staff who coped well with a fairly large group. The food is authentic and hearty with an emphasis on pork and sausages. Vegetarian and fish dishes available but few in number. Leave room for the rich and delicious desserts! Out and About.
Did lunch with an old school friend from Sydney. They opened the place just for my booking of two people. The dark Bavarian wheat beer was fantastic. Good solid meals followed. We were outside on the delightful balcony, very pleased with everything.
An affront to Bavarian hospitality. The night at Black Forrest started out OK. It's very quirky and has a certain kitsch charm and an in-house pianist. The meals did take a long time to arrive during which time we were brought a bread stick each by the staff who "thought we would lke to try one".
At the end of the night we were overcharged for our drinks (the staff reluctantly subtracted it from the bill). My friend noticed another mystery amount on the bill and realised we'd been charged $2 each for the "complimentary" bread. When we expressed surprise the staff lost all control - calling us stupid for even thinking that the bread might be free. Needless to say, nothing could have made her take the $8 of bread off the bill It was the most appalling display and certainly left a very bad taste in all our mouths.
Overall an incredibly overpriced meal - $200 for 4 people with no entrée BYO wine, (unless you count the bread sticks) and only one dessert between 4. None of this would have been a problem as we were all in a great mood until our run in with the rudest staff in history. Having spent a lot of time in Germany, this place is a total affront to the famous southern German largesse.
