Following an abysmal breakfast experience elsewhere the previous morning (long waits, cold meals, bottled orange juice plonked unceremoniously on the table, watery coffee) the Stockmarket Cafe across the road was a welcome find. Four hungry appetites were quickly sated by superb breakfasts. The creamiest scrambled eggs studded with chives and piled atop tasty sourdough toast; curls of sweet, smoked salmon wrapped around a wobbly pile of scrambled eggs on a crunchy hashbrown with a drizzle of green, peppery olive oil on the plate; French toast - two huge chunks of pillowy, egg-soaked fried bread topped with crispy bacon, served with maple syrup (which tasted real). What's more, the rich yet smooth coffee was delicious, hot chocolates smooth and (very!) chocolatey, orange juice tasted freshly squeezed (even if not, at least it wasn't served in its original container!) and the service was delightful.
The ebullient hostess chatted to everyone while keeping things ticking over nicely in the all-too-tiny space. The Stockmarket café made us feel completely welcome and was the perfect start to a winter's day in the Blue Mountains. Yes, the space is small but the food, service and atmosphere make it well worth the wait.

Bustling Leura in the Blue Mountains has an abundance of eateries where you can get everything from a quick cuppa to a full dining experience. But on a recent shopping stop, we just wanted a good coffee and a snack and stumbled across the Stockmarket Cafe right in the main street next door to the wonderful Megalong Bookshop. Stockmarket doesn't pretend to be anything other than a coffee and cake cafe where you can stand by the wall-shelf and read the paper (as a couple of locals were) or sit at one of the 3 tables hewn from raw timber. It has a certain bohemian ambience and somewhere to stop and take a breather.
The coffee was first class but the serving of raisin toast was unbelieveable. Two door-stop thick slices of piping hot raising toast with a very generous slab of real butter and a big dollop of strawberry jam arrived in quick time. With the autumn afternoon sun painting the leaves of the trees along the mall and a slight chill just beginning to sneak in off the mountains, coffee and raisin toast at the Stockmarket seemed just right.
