Shanker’s Authentic Indian Cuisine is now at home in the heart of Prospect at 89 Prospect Rd. Occupying a grand Art Deco style building which has served the community well as Post Office, Police Station and Court House, Shanker’s continues to serve the finest Authentic Indian Cuisine in South Australia.
Whilst Shanker continues to create his signature South Indian dishes such as Madras Lamb, Chettinad Chicken and Fish Curry his perhaps most famous dish, Shanker’s Butter Chicken, still proves to be an ever popular choice.
Since relocating in November 2009 Shanker has expanded his menu to include some favourite North Indian dishes from the tandoor such as Tandoori Chicken, Sheek Kebab and Naan bread. The addition of the tandoor, expertly employed by Tandoori Chef Raj, has added a new dimension to the Shanker’s dining experience.
With a very fine selection of Australian and imported wines accompanying the finest Indian fare and set within a charming heritage listed building Shanker’s Authentic Indian Cuisine is guaranteed to please even the most discerning diner.

Every time I come to Adelaide (from Sydney) I must satisfy my taste buds and dine at Shanker's. I have lived in Asia for 6 years and find Shanker's cuisine second to none. A most enjoyable experience, great service, warm family atmosphere, fantastic food and love the chats. Looking forward to my next visit. Adelaide, you are blessed.

I ordered takeaway from there which had chunky inedible spices and things which should have been taken out. The flavour and quality was far from great! Definitely not worth the money paid!

I have ordered Masala Dosai. Dosa is oily, Curry is uncooked, chutney is cold
sambar is only better. Highly priced for the quality offered.

Wow, I don’t know where that last guy went, but it wasn't here.
My friends and I go here very regularly, most of the time when we think of where to go, it ends up being here. We usually end up going through 2 baskets of pappadams, always crisp and beautiful. I think I’ve had every dish on the menu, and have liked every one. My current fravs are Honey Chilli Chicken (cooked very differently than everyone else), and the special chicken. So many spices infused to create the perfect dish.
Love the place, and everyone I take there becomes regulars. Where else does the owner the chef come out to the front of the restaurant and talk to the patrons and ask how everything is.

I can't understand what sirturtle is talking about. I have been a regular at this restaurant for years. I have seen the staff use neat Detol on the high chairs as they are stacked away so I might suggest that the 'stale pungent urine' smell that sirturtle smelt definitely did not come from the Restaurant. Sure, it is not the most stylish restaurant in Adelaide but I'm there for the food and atmosphere.
It is a family restaurant not a 'fine dining' restaurant, even though the food is befitting a fine restaurant. I've always felt comfortable there whether eating before I go out to the theatre or whether I've just come back from being out for the day. It's all about the food and that is spectacular. To be awarded the Lifestyle Food Award for the Best Indian Restaurant in Australia and coming in the top 4 of the Messenger Press awards they must be doing something right!
If the meals were not right any one else would speak to the chef straight away obviously this was not done but left to air on a public forum like this. I too have eaten in many Indian restaurants around the world and this is the only one that I have eaten in that makes me feel as though I am back in South India. The food is very authentic, perhaps, if you travelled to South India you would realise this. If you genuinely understand the subtle delicacies of South Indian Cuisine this is definitely the place to eat. Bravo Shanker!

My only conclusion from spending an evening here is that the previous reviewers must be quite delusional. The all important first impression: As we entered through the front door my wife and I both smelt the distinct aroma of stale pungent urine, either from one or all of the baby high chairs untidily stacked up next to the entrance or compliments of some drunk using the door alcove in the wee hours of the previous night.
We almost walked out then and there. In hindsight we should have. Second impression: We felt totally out of place and uncomfortable amongst the entire rest of the patrons dressed in board shorts, T-shirts and thongs who stared at us as if we were from another planet, I think we actually were.
Third impression: Stale and soggy pappadams. I asked the waitress “Is it usual to have a pool of oil sitting in the pappadams shells?” to which she replied “Yes, they’re cooked in oil”. Strange, I have never in my life come across a pappadam served drenched in oil so much so that the edges drooped limply downwards. Disgusting and inedible.
Final impression: The main meals came out in the reverse as to how we had ordered them, that is my wife wanted hot curry and I had ordered mild, but they got the orders cock about with mine being hot and my wife’s mild. When the waitress came up to ask how our meals were we queried whether we had been served up the wrong orders only to be met with a blank look and the comment “that could have happened I suppose” before walking off to serve others without another word. I found my meat very dry and the entire dish before me totally boring and uninteresting as did my wife.
The breads were ok but “man cannot live on bread alone”. The best part of the meal was the superb award winning sparkling red wine, but then we brought that in ourselves as BYO. We were back home eating far more enjoyable garage purchased ice-cream sticks in front of the TV by 9.00 pm, a record early night for us after eating out on a Saturday night.
My wife and I have eaten at numerous Indian restaurants all over this country and we both definitely agreed that this establishment easily falls at the bottom of our lists in all aspects. After this miserable experience I cannot see us ever venturing north to eat anywhere past O’Connell St North Adelaide from this point on. There are any number of outstanding Indian restaurants in the city, eastern suburbs, inner south and the inner beaches of Henley & Glenelg to ever be bothered travelling any distance at all up Main North Rd. If you are a genuine lover of quality Indian cuisine simply do not bother with eating here and stick closer to the city.

If you enjoy a good 'Twin Plate Curry', eat here. I could rave on for hours, but I feel the proof is in the pudding. Without doubt the best Indian food in Australia, and amongst the best in the world. I should know, as I have tried most.

Been going to this restaurant for a number of years now, and everyone that I have taken to it has become a regular. The best curry in Australia and has won the Food Channel BEST Indian restaurant in Australia.

Fantastic! This is where I worked out that I like (good) curry. I was unsure, so they made it up with the curry separated from the base the first time I went, he knew what I'd like better than I did. The quality of the food was excellent, the price right, the service good and friendly. Not as pretty as some restaurants, but a great place to go with mates.
