As visitors from Sydney we were led to believe (from the tourist brochures and internet sites) that the Hindley Street dining strip boasted a selection of good restaurants. But what a disappointment it turned out to be! Just a few dodgy-looking eateries, most empty or half empty on a quiet Tuesday night.

Mekong Thai was the only one which had more than a handful of diners, so we figured it was probably the best one, or the least worst. In fact it was quite full and we were lucky to get a table at about 7.00 pm. But we were glad that we choose it because Mekong Thai serves fresh and tasty food in a pleasant atmosphere.

We had the ginger chicken and a vegetarian dish. The veggies were crunchy and the chicken was full of delicate authentic Thai flavours. Servings were generous and the large bowl of rice was easily enough for two people.

Decor and table settings are modest and unpretentious. The plain wooden furniture and white walls are not much to write home about, but we didn’t mind as we were pleased to find a half decent place in this gloomy street. Service was polite and efficient.

Mekong has both an indoors and an outdoor dining area, we choose to sit outside as it was a typically hot and humid night Adelaide night. And full marks to these guys for keeping the outdoor area smoke-free (in Sydney you can forget about alfresco dining due to it being a smokers’ haven). The bill came to a reasonable $38 for two dishes and rice.

Close your eyes if you’re heading for the toilets and forget about towels or a dryer.
But overall though we left feeling full and satisfied. Next time we’re in Adelaide, we’ll head back to this place.
